True, but people will not accept a steep increase in petrol or diesel. You should also consider that we already pay more for the older generation cars that run on Indian roads, and adding to this the steep increase is just a burden. Let me quote an example, the Hyundai Accent 2008 (or Verna in India and a few other developing countries..) costs about six lakh rupees in developed countries. Mind you, it comes with 'Advanced dual front airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and roof-mounted curtain side-impact airbags', ABS and other safety features...but over here...the car costs close to 8 lakhs and does not include any of the aforementioned safety features! we're always taken for a ride..

kya kare kahan jayee.
You know it was expected, and due for a long time. (considering we have already crossed peak oil) The wells only get empty from there.
Russia scrambling for the Arctic almost invading it. and US wanting to control all the taps for himself.
Wat 2 do. :)

I mean come to think think practically, is there a way out of our dependence on fossil fuel.
This is way beyond any government or party intervention, be it congress or any other anjupanju coalition.
Face the truth. There is infact, no way out.
Mankind has boxed herself into a tight spot, and then Dil mangay more. :p

Haazaron kwaashen aisi ke har khwaish pe dam nikle,
Bahut nikle mere armaan, lekin phir bhi dam nikle.

I see your point here. Also, the government forgets the fundamentals of traffic regulations leading to high fuel consumption. We pay tax, and some more tax, and get no proper infrastructure to drive our cars/bikes, and finally pay more for the fuel. What more can a government do to torture middle-class citizens? The finance ministry and the petroleum ministry can sit and think of innovative ways to burden the general public...
