There are quite a few applications that enable you to have your own social start page. Applications like iGoogle, Netvibes, Pageflakes, etc., are the most common ones you would’ve come across. If you are using Firefox or Google Chrome, you must try Feedly – a simple and efficient browser extension. Feedly creates a lovely magazine-like start page, which is heavily customizable.
You can log on to Feedly with your Google id, and start customizing the various page views (or category views) like cover, digest, latest, buzz, shared, history, and so on. If you’re already logged on to Twitter, Feedly is way too happy to grab all the happenings pertaining to your Twitter id, and display them on the start page.
Feedly’s search feature is worth a mention. The results for the search terms are quite relevant, though not extensive – it might improve over time. You can also get a gist of the news/article within the same page by clicking on the link – then decide whether to take that on to a new page/tab.
I’m using Feedly to organize my most visited news-science-technology sites, along side Twitter and my blog – I’m liking it. Why don’t you give it a try?
