WALL-E: Movie review

Well, what should I say? I’ve been rather late in writing a review for a movie that was released about 3 weeks ago. Anyways, nothing has been lost yet, and there are still quite a few million people out there waiting to watch this animation masterpiece.

Wall-E is a typical love story, where one can draw parallels with the Indian cinema (or even Titanic!). So, the story is simple. Imagine an Indian cinema where a poor guy falls in love with a rich girl who has to follow a directive, and eventually the girl getting attracted to this poor guy in rags. However, the storyline of Wall-E doesn’t have a negative character that will spoil the romance between the guy and the girl. The most amazing part of this simple and monotonous love story is the ‘presentation’ – how powerful can one imagine, animate and portray the characters of the various robots appearing in the movie? Simply superb!!

The movie starts with the main character Wall-E collecting, compacting and stacking garbage that has covered the planet earth. The scene of our earth covered with garbage appeared brownish, and it immediately made me visualize our earth in such a sorry state if no one cares about our environment.

So, what happens to the people of our planet earth? They are happily leading virtual lives in a virtual environment in space; lost bones and became like meat balls not able to stand on the two feet, comfortably. The way they commute and interact with each other has been portrayed so powerfully that one has to applaud the animators heights of imagination and creativity. 3-D animation technologies have improved so much, and in most of the scenes one might just forget that they are watching something that does not exist in the real world.

Flaws? Of course there are, but one can happily ignore them for the sake of appreciating the grandeur of the movie as a whole. Wall-E and its (or his?) girl friend Eve (Eva, as Wall-E calls her) doing a space ballet raises eyebrows; probably the newest robot version Eva may adapt to the extremities of the cosmos, but how can a land-garbage cleaning older generation robot endure the same? As I said, simply forget it and enjoy the visuals.

What I liked?

• Wall-E – the robot
• Wall-E – the character
• Eva – liked the way she shrugs her shoulders when the cockroach tickles her neck
• The cleaner robot – desperately chasing and cleaning the ‘Foreign Contaminants’ brought on board the space ship by Wall-E
• Humans – craving to return to earth, realizing that land is of course greener on the other side
• Smooth music, no harsh sounds – even the sirens are sweet and muted
• The colors – really made me feel for our earth seeing it painted brown, covered by garbage. Wall-E, Eva and the space ship color depths: impressive
• The spark – when Eva kisses Wall-E

and the list is endless. Go watch the movie, ‘m sure you’ll like it. Put in your thoughts over here, and let me see if we think the same.
