The gentle giant – fear and anger

The gentle giant – fear and anger

By Naren Ubi on March 31, 2010

I didn’t realize that this elephant was staring at me with fear and anger in its eyes. At least, that’s what I deduced when I blew this pic up on a large screen display. It’s probably thinking if I’m the land mafia that cuts down trees and plants small granite stones in the corners, marking [...]

The green prophecy

The green prophecy

By Naren Ubi on March 23, 2009

A poignant and powerful poem by K Narendra Pai The day shall come, when breathing will be few, The task will be tough, of making a salad green, The day shall come, not from any blue; Soon we shall fly high but birds will be unseen. Trees will shine gorgeous; fancy the plastic luster! Meet [...]

Paperless receipts – yet another initiative to save our environment

Paperless receipts – yet another initiative to save our environment

By Naren Ubi on January 20, 2009

Industrialists and environmentalists are going crazy about making us live GREEN. TransactionTree has come up with a new initiative of creating paperless receipts. This initiative serves three purposes: Saves you from getting frustrated standing in the long queue of the grocery store, while the paper roll in the cash counter gets jammed. Saves paper – [...]

Go green – Electrify the dance floor!

By Naren Ubi on November 6, 2008

Previously, I’ve written a couple of articles on going green, and how the environmentalists and industrialists worldwide are going crazy about inventing new techniques to contain global warming.

Now, it looks like going Green has been catching up with night clubs all over the world, where they can generate quite a lot of power from those electrifying teenage/middle-aged dancers thumping their feet, consciously or unconsciously, on the dance floor. This is what I call cool technology! The technology behind this may sound very simple, yet it appears to be powerful enough to generate about 60% (not sure if it is theoretical or practical) of the night club’s electricity.

Carbon capture and storage – Is the future green-hot for coal?

By Naren Ubi on November 4, 2008

It is a universal truth that burning of coal is one of the major causes of global warming, acid rain and other toxins in the air. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, about 3,700,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) is released into the atmosphere – by a typical coal plant in an year. It may sound oxymoronic if one talks about using coal and going green. Well, why not? Carbon Capture and Storage, or CCS in short, seems to be the technological answer to this oxymoron!? The US 2008 elections are red hot right now, and many who’ve voted for Obama or McCain are keeping their fingers crossed.

Is global warming driving industrialists and environmentalists crazy, world over?

By Naren Ubi on September 20, 2008

A few days ago, the National Snow and Ice Data Center, Colorado, released pictures and data on the receding ice-line of the Arctic sea ice. According to the report, the extent of the sea ice reduced to 4.52 million square kilometers, which, even in layman terms, looks alarming. Environmentalists and industrialists around the world, who are already concerned about the many ill-effects of global warming, are innovating and inventing many new technologies and ideas that may help reduce the emission of green house gases into the atmosphere. I just came across an interesting article..

E-waste: Be a little friendly to our only HOME

By Naren Ubi on September 12, 2008

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguisable from magic” – Arthur C. Clarke. True, isn’t it? I’ve always marvelled at technologies such as the television (TV), computers, cellular phones, portable music gadgets, CD, DVD, Blue-ray, and so on, the list is endless. But never have I wondered about what happens to them, or where they go, when they become kaputt and obsolete. I came across a scientific journal on e-waste where it was mentioned that more than 45 million tonnes of electronic gadgets are discarded worldwide, well, eventually piling…
