When new search engines come with new technologies and innovations, the existing search engine companies always find ways to stay on top via their new ideas. The newest search engines like Cuil and Nuemo have their own unique selling propositions like categorized search, integrated video search, suggestive search, and so on.
Today, I stumbled upon Yahoo Glue (still in beta) that aims to provide a universal search feature by listing Wikipedia pages, videos, stock quotes, related headlines, blogs, images and (question &) answers for a particular search term. For example, when I searched for Chennai I can see thumbnail pictures, map of Chennai, related advertisements and hot deals, current weather and forecast, and realted news.
Since the application is in beta, not all search terms return results on Yahoo Glue. When you enter a search term and if it is not found on Yahoo Glue, you are given an option to search for the same in the conventional Yahoo search.
I think the new entrants to the search business are forcing the existing players to constantly improve their search offenings and layout. Let’s see where these search engine wars take us to.
I think Google already has something called Universal search. Yahoo just follows the footsteps of Google! However i like the display of maps related to the search
